The symptoms remain after a "apt purge steam && rm -rf /home/chrism/.steam && apt autoremove && apt install steam".

I neglected to mention that I am on "proposed" repo; my system is current with that repo as of now.

Same here, I've even manually upgraded to 390.25-0ubuntu2 - still fails with glxChooseVisual

Installed libnvidia-gl-390:i386 from 390.25-0ubuntu2 in addition to amd64's nvidia-driver-390 and it works now!

The reason is that 32bit libs are installed in /#/ (sic!) :)

As a temporary fix.

Add

/#/

to

/etc/ld.so.conf.d/i386-linux-gnu.conf

and do:

ldconfig /#/

This appears to be fixed in the deps of the current repo iteration of the nvidia-driver-390 package (390.25-0ubuntu4); or at least Steam works after a purge and reinstall that package.

This is possibly fixed now that Mesa 18.0 is in bionic. Please update your system and retest.
