Now the source is in Hardy... I've tried to compile it with prevu, but there is an issue with libnss3-dev, in fact the source requires a version >= 3.11.7, but for gutsy the version is 3.11.5-3. I thought that doesn't make sense to backport the nss library, so I'd patched the source to use the version 3.11.5-3: I'd compiled it with prevu, installed and it works fine...so I'm asking if there is possibility to patch the code, do some testing and backport it..

I'm afraid you'll need to do a new backport request for libnss, in order to fulfill this one, as backport can't touch the original files...

Can someone answer as to binary compatibility with this version of pidgin and previous plugins? I'm assuming, as it always seems to be the case with this package, that all 10+ of the pidgin plugin packages will need to be rebuild?

If you mean pidgin-plugin-pack, I'm using the version 2.0.0-1 with pidgin 2.3.1, and the plugins work fine!

Since libnss can't be backported (see Bug #185941), why don't we ask for a source change backport to make pidgin depending on 3.11.5-3 instead on 3.11.7?

Not sure if it helps, but I'm running Pidgin 2.3.1 from
http://www.getdeb.net/app/Pidgin

Seems to work fine on my system.

I am actually doing the same for the time being. I would much rather use official packages over getdeb. I am sure there are many others that would benefit from using the newer version, especially laptop users.

I uploaded a backported version of pidgin to my ppa, I only changed the build dep of libnss3-dev to 3.11.5. Please test it. The following plugins need to be tested:

- basic plugins of pidgin-plugin-pack
- pidgin-otr
- pidgin-librvp
- pidgin-libnotify
- pidgin-hotkeys
- pidgin-guifications
- pidgin-extprefs
- pidgin-encryption
- pidgin-blinklight

I tested guifications, the gutsy version works fine with the backport.

It would also be great if you could indicate with which network you tested (jabber, IRC, MSN...)

jdong: the change in the build dep might break a fix provided here : http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=+%23450402 I'm not sure about this, could you please check ?

Link to my ppa, package are not built yet but it should be ready in a few hours: https://launchpad.net/~jerome-guelfucci/+archive

Thank you all in advance for the testing !

I spent around two hours testing all those plugins with arpbookmac. Everything worked fine for us, even the complicated encryption plugins ! The only plugin we could not test is pidgin-librvp becaused we could not figure out how to get it to work...

I would like to add that my sisters have been running this backported version for more than a month, using it every day to LOL on MSN, and they haven't found any issues yet !

I also tested the following networks: MSN, IRC, and AIM. I would like to thank arpbookmac again for the time he spent !

This backport seems quite safe to me, it would also kill all those unofficial unsafe backports like the getdeb one.

As said in my previous post we already got one tester for this, something like 5 or 6 others are needed before processing this backport.

Thanks Jerome,

to continue with this testing, I'd like 5 different people to try Jerome's
packages, and if they all work that'll be enough QA to convince me.

I am using this package with MSN, AOL, Yahoo, and Google.

I am using the Autoaccept, Guifications, History, Hotkeys, Message Notification and Psychic Mode plugins. They seem to be working as always.
