audacious with alsa output bleeds stereo channels

Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
audacious:
Installed: 3.9-3~webupd8~
Candidate: 3.9-3~webupd8~
I am using an external USB DAC. When I select the alsa output plugin, the left and right channels bleed into each other.
This does not happen when using the PulseAudio output plugin.
