Bug Description

**Specs:** Ubuntu Bionic; NVidia GTX 1070 w/`nvidia-387` drivers.

**Problem:** After installing a new GTX 1070 and installing `nvidia-387`, I get a black screen of death AFTER logging into Ubuntu (i.e., the login screen shows up just fine). I'm not even able to access other TTYs (the error logs below were retrieved via SSH).

**/var/log/Xorg.0.log** There doesn't seem to be anything problematic in this file.

**/var/log/Xorg.1.log** The problematic message seems to be:

    [ 26.455] (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Failed to acquire modesetting permission.
    [ 26.455] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failing initialization of X screen 0

    [ 26.457] (EE) Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file.

**Conf files.** Here are my conf files:

    $ cd /usr/share/X11
    $ find . -name "*.conf"
    ./xorg.conf.d/glamoregl.conf
    ./xorg.conf.d/10-amdgpu.conf
    ./xorg.conf.d/40-libinput.conf
    ./xorg.conf.d/50-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf
    ./xorg.conf.d/50-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf
    ./xorg.conf.d/10-quirks.conf
    ./xorg.conf.d/10-radeon.conf
    ./xorg.conf.d/70-wacom.conf

I tried deleting all of these except for the nvidia one and rebooting, and the error persists. In addition, I tried deleting all of them and generating a new one via `sudo X -configure` but get

    $ cd /usr/share/X11$
    $ sudo pkill X && sudo X -configure
    _XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
    _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running

    (EE) Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

**kms.** Finally, in case relevant:

    syscopyarea 16384 1 drm_kms_helper
    sysfillrect 16384 1 drm_kms_helper

George, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

1) Regarding the version of the nvidia drivers you attempted to use, it appears you are using an upstream or 3rd party version. Could you please mention where you obtained the driver from?

2) Could you please install a supported version of the nvidia driver found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia and advise to the results?

3) Do you have this issue if you don't install a proprietary nvidia driver?

4) To advise, when attaching logs, please don't snip/grep/cut logs. Attach logs in their entirety from the first entry of a boot to when the issue is reproducible. Developers can't work with snips.

Might it make sense to unexpire this bug?
