Trackpoint mouse on a Lenovo Thinkpad USB keyboard is not detected

I can't see mouse settings on the capplet on a desktop system with a Lenovo Thinkpad USB keyboard attached. lsusb reports this:

the trackpoint still works, but default acceleration value is a bit too much for it, so a workaround is to attach another mouse and change the value to something more manageable

Looks like it works fine on a wayland session but not xorg..

seems to have been fixed since
