Bug Description

Downloaded latest x64 daily build of Budgie today. Checked SHA256sum, all OK. Created bootable USB stick, & went for the option to install straight away without trialling in Live-USB mode.

During the installation slideshow, just after the "Make the most of the web" slide, the screen dimmed out as if going to sleep, but did so very quickly and would not re-awaken with any button-press. Meanwhile:
- the laptop was plugged into main power
- the keyboard was still responsive (I could toggle caps lock off and on, judging by the light)
- the activity light on my USB stick kept flickering.

After another 10min or so, I turned off the power by doing a hard reset. Upon rebooting, I got a Budgie splashscreen & working desktop. I left this sit at the welcome screen for a handful of minutes, and the screen blacked out again, and again wouldn't respond to any keypress. I left it for some more minutes, then pressed the keyboard again, and to my surprise got the screenlock screen asking me for my password. Once I'd entered it, the screen again immediately went black and unresponsive.

I downloaded & installed a 32bit Lubuntu daily build just a few days ago on a different laptop, and didn't see any such behaviour, so I think this is budgie-specific.

Thanks,
Ken.

Weird... I just pressed a key again to wake the laptop up, this time getting the lock screen & password prompt, and unlike last time got a working desktop...

It just gets weirder. On the welcome screen, I pressed the button for "Browser Ballot", and once again the screen went black & unresponsive straight away.

I'm confident that this is not a hardware fault, as I was using Win7 for a few hours on that same laptop only last night, and it showed no such behaviour.

As you might expect, when I go into Budgie's power settings and turn off "Dim screen when inactive", the desktop behaves normally. So that's a workaround, of a sort.

Sounds like a mutter issue. I would expect the same behaviour to occur with ubuntu + gnome-shell itself running an xorg session.

Interesting...
In order to test your theory, I downloaded the latest daily build of regular Ubuntu 18.04 (x64) about 12hrs ago, & have just installed it on the same laptop.

This particular bug seems to be budgie-specific. By comparison, during the install process for regular Ubuntu, the screen stays awake for much longer (until the install is ~80% complete), then awakes normally with a keypress. Likewise, once installed, the screen sleeps & wakes normally & without fuss.

And according to the following article, regular Ubuntu 18.04 is using Xorg by default...

Thanks,
Ken.

In the very latest daily build of 32-bit Ubuntu Budgie, screen sleeping is working correctly. I'll download the 64-bit version and test this also.
