Bug Description

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 on a Dell Inspiron 1420 with Intel Mobile GM965/PM965/GL960 Express Integrated Graphics Controller with the default drivers and X configuration.

When the s-video tv-out is used, the image showed on TV is too bright and the colors are satured and shifted to yellow.

It's not a hardware problem: using M$ Vista the colors on the TV are showed equal to the notebook screen.

I cant get anything to display on my tv. It flashes black when I hit FnF8 then it goes back to blue. I have looked around and here is all that I have found with no answers http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-hardware-18/getting-s-video-out-to-work-on-inspiron-1420n-605887/ and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=557660

I just got it to work by restarting my computer with the s-video cable plugged in. It is interesting that a restart is required to use the s-video cable but is not for the vga adapter to work. Ohh well a restart is all that was needed though for anyone else who has this problem.

Toby, you're right: to be able to get the TV-out working it's necessary to start the inspiron 1420 with the s-video cable plugged in. Nevertheless, this is not the bug reported above (wrong colors on TV), thanks anyway.

In hardy my svideo out is not working at all on the 1420n. I am wondering if I am the only one having this problem?

Toby, I'm having the same problem. I try also with Hardy (Ubuntu 8.04_alfa 6_i386 Desktop: kernel 2.6.22-14, X.Org X Server 1.4.0.90, intel_drv 2.2.1 ) and my svideo tvout stops working: no image at all , only a dark TV screen.

BTW: I use http://www.high-techproductions.com/ColorBars2.gif to get a pair of pictures (attached):

 1. TV and laptop with W. Vista
 2. TV and laptop with Ubuntu 7.10 (note the green vertical bar at the center clearly different)

I have a aopen MP965DR miniPC, I've update the xserver-xorg-video-intel to the latest, then it can show on the TV through s-video, but the color is also seem too bright, indeed I think it not bright, it seems some color have lost(I try to set the depth to 24 in xorg.conf, but still not work). But when I change the driver to "vesa", the color problem is solved, but I can't set the size of the output screen.

What the problem with the driver?

Hi, the color problem have been solved of mini-PC, what I did is:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Get the latest intel GM965 driver source code "xf86-video-intel" from: http://intellinuxgraphics.org/download.html
2. modify RGB parameters in i830_tv.c
3. Build and install the latest driver according to: http://intellinuxgraphics.org/install.html

Than it works, and the color can accord with your requirement.

Thank you all for the answers.

unggnu: the "s-video TV-out not working problem on Ubuntu 8.04" has been solved in debian: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=485616 (this is also consistent with supser_hill posts).

supser_hill: I get the latest intel GM965 driver source code "xf86-video-intel", but I can't find the right line in the i830_tv.c to change the RGB parameters. Could you please tell me the RGB values and the correct line?

Thanks,

I have a similar problem. But I noticed that while Icons/Nautilus/Wallpaper were "oversaturated", videos played with mplayer/totem/vlc were not.

[This is an automatic notice.]

We'd like to forward your bug upstream, however upstream requires
that you first test it against their newer driver code.

To save you the effort of building the driver from source, we've built
packages for the driver and its new dependencies.

So you have a couple options:

 1. Download and test .debs for intrepid, from:
     https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive

 -or-

 2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).
     See http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ for ISOs

Thanks ahead of time! You can simply reply to this email to report your
findings.

P.S., if you wish to forward your bug upstream yourself, please follow
these directions to do so:
