Bug Description

Description: Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS (Kubuntu)
Release: 16.04

Installed recent updates with Synaptic. Kernel load failed. Next reboot with default Linux kernel resulted in blank screen instead of login screen.

Rebooted to Linux kernel 4.10 and booted fine to login screen and successful login, hence this report.

Downloaded upstream kernel 4.15rc7, and same problem reported during install. Reboot to 4.15 led to blank screen instead of login screen.

Rebooted to Linux kernel 4.10, successful login and removal of upstream kernal 4.15.

Error during install did refer to nvidia build make log. Also, noted there are patches at the following location: /usr/src/nvidia-340-340.102/patches/

Patches exist up to working kernal 4.10, but not 4.13 or 4.15. Is this a nvidia issue, or a kernel issue? If nvidia, reference: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1025051/fully-working-patches-2-of-them-for-nvidia-driver-340-104-compiler-installer-file-and-linux-kernels-4-13-amp-4-14/

If I can provide something else, let me know.

I am starting to think the latest legacy nvidia driver does not support linux 4.13?

"Legacy GPUs are older-generation NVIDIA GPUs which are no longer supported in the regular NVIDIA Unified UNIX Graphics Driver. Instead, these GPUs will continue to be supported through special "Legacy GPU" drivers that will be updated periodically to add support for new versions of Linux system components (e.g., new Linux kernels, new versions of the X server, etc)."
