Bug Description

Installation frozen on this and even after a dpkg --configure -a:

Setting up linux-image-4.13.0-25-generic (4.13.0-25.29) ...
Running depmod.
update-initramfs: deferring update (hook will be called later)
The link /initrd.img is a dangling linkto /boot/initrd.img-4.13.0-25-generic
vmlinuz(/boot/vmlinuz-4.13.0-25-generic
) points to /boot/vmlinuz-4.13.0-25-generic
 (/boot/vmlinuz-4.13.0-25-generic) -- doing nothing at /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-4.13.0-25-generic.postinst line 491.
Examining /etc/kernel/postinst.d.
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/apt-auto-removal 4.13.0-25-generic /boot/vmlinuz-4.13.0-25-generic

You may need to run the following from a terminal:

sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then re-install the package or updates.

If that does not resolve your issue, please mark the bug as "Confirmed"

running apt-get install -f will hang on

I tried pretty much everything I could find online, the solution was simply backing-up my files through the grub recovery root shell and then reinstalling.

Can confirm lirel's observation about #1705345. Killing plymouth --ping made the installation continue for me.
