Bug Description

Sometimes when I open the lid of my laptop to input my password to unlock, everything freezes and I am unable to do anything but to hard reboot. I am talking about the lock screen (logged in already just locked).

Please run this command to collect more information:

And then please look in /var/crash for any crash files. If you find any then please run:

and tell us what happens.

Thanks. I can't see anything that might explain this in your log. Did you find anything in /var/crash ?

There are some files but they are related to crashes of Nautilus and Totem. Should I include those?

Daniel van Vugt (vanvugt) wrote :

No thanks, we don't need any of those.

I suggest next you should:
  1. Install SSH: sudo apt install openssh-server
  2. Log into the affected machine remotely from a second machine using ssh.
  3. On the second machine start watching the log: journalctl -f
  4. On the affected machine: reproduce the freeze.
  5. Copy/screenshot/photo the final state of the log and provide it here.

Now it is happening also before sliding the date/time screen up. Unfortunately, It only happened when I was not watching the log. I am trying to keep an android tablet connected via SSH to the affected machine watching the outputs of that command you gave me most of the time, so I hope I will get what you need as soon as possible.

Could these errors be related to the bug?

Jan 19 12:57:31 yassine-hp-notebook gnome-shell[2310]: Failed to read EDID from 'eDP-1': No such file or directory

After it freezed, I was still able to enter commands through SSH and the machine responded normally, which I think confirms that only gnome-shell is affected by this bug.

Similar problem here. I haven't got two computers at hand to ssh the culprit machine but I strongly suspect this is the same bug.

I too am affected by this bug.

It is intermittent for me, and not immediately reproducible, however I was able to reproduce it and grab some journalctl lines via SSH if it is at all helpful.

I should also add that I have set gnome-tweak-tool -> Power -> Suspend when laptop lid closed -> Off

And I have also tried killing the ignore-lid-switch-tweak process in hopes it may have been related however it had no immediate affect.

journalctl1.txt shows the issue occuring, black screen, no keyboard/mouse response.
journalctl2.txt shows opening and closing the lid during this "frozen" condition.

I was then able to recover from this condition via ssh by doing a pkill -HUP gnome-shell, which was showing 100% cpu usage.

I was presented with the login screen which after logging in took me to the lock screen since I had already been logged in and locked the screen before I closed the lid.

Hope that's helpful.

Sounds like this may be bug 1724259 (fixed last night).

Please try updating your system, make sure you then have libinput 1.8.4 installed, reboot and retest.

How can I check which version of libinput I have? I was only able to check the version of libinput-tools using apt-cache policy and that package's version is 1.8.2-1ubuntu2. I do not know if those 2 packages are the same or if their versions can differ from each other. I installed all updates today with the software updater.

It sounds like you have just installed the fix for bug 1724259.

Please verify by running:
  dpkg -s libinput10 | grep Version

Please also let us know if the bug reoccurs after that.

And reboot. You should then have version 1.8.4-0ubuntu0.17.10.1

Please tell us if the problem persists after that.
