That's odd. It appears something got explicitly killed during the install/build process:

Makefile:1546: recipe for target '_module_/var/lib/dkms/nvidia-384/384.90/build' failed
make[1]: *** [_module_/var/lib/dkms/nvidia-384/384.90/build] Killed

Can you reproduce the issue? If so then does running 'free -m' or 'df -h' show you're running out of memory or disk space?

I wish I could reproduce it now, but I've since returned that video card and installed an Nvidia 970 GTX -- and installing drivers with that card in place went totally smooth. It was exactly as it should have been.

I'll say this though: I tried installing those drivers many, many times across various versions of Ubuntu (16.04, 17.04, and 17.10) and even Fedora 27 and the installation process always died leaving me with an OS that had drivers. On Fedora 27, the process died at the 93% mark as opposed to the 95%, but it failed none the less.

So I can't reproduce it now, but it's hit me many times before I finally submitted this issue, and for some reason it went away when I put in a non-10 series card. I've since ordered another 1070 ti from a different brand hoping this was a one off some how caused by the card :/ I'll update when the new card is in.

After the update of yesterday (for kernel 4.13.0-17.20) the session of login by the GDM3 began to freeze soon after the click on the button 'Enter', that is to say, the gnome-shell does not appear.

I also noticed that in this frozen state, Ctrl+Alt+F'n 'does not work properly ... Just getting a dark screen with the cursor blinking at the upper left top.

I believe this problem may be related to the nvidia driver because in one of my several attempts to reboot the computer I finally got succeess in a Ctrl+Alt+F5 and ran a 'sudo prime-select intel' ...

... Well, I did not succeed in 'sudo shutdown -r now', because again, after ran the command, linux got stuck on the dark screen with cursor blinking at the top left ... I had to shut down holding the laptop shutdown button .

Then I turned the notebook back on, and this time I was able to go through the login phase and the gnome-shell ran normally.

Well maybe the problem is not related to nvidia driver... I purged all nvidia driver and installed back nouveal... after restart the notebook I got the same issue: frozzen system between login and gnome-sell.

Actually, after several forced rebootings, I could reinstall nvidia driver in a Ctrl+Alt+F5 text session and defined another 'sudo prime-select intel' ... only after this I could restart and login normally.

Well, for me, I could install the driver once I set up my gcc to 7th version (because I have several versions for different purposes).

sudo update-alternatives --config gcc

---

I'm not sure how, but gcc with version lower than 5 causes various crashes every system update
