This bug has been reported to Samba and fixed.

The first official Samba release with this fix is 3.0.27a

This bug renders Samba pretty useless as a Windows Server replacement.
It also has certain "security" implications in that hidden folders are revealed when a directory tree is copied

The fix seems pretty straight-forward.

Is it possible to backport to the samba package used with Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Server Edition?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - the Hardy Heron.

Glad it's been nominated for Dapper..but not sure if it will get priority it deserves. As it has security implications...can it be patched into a security update? Or am I being too greedy?

At the moment, for basic admin tasks, I am having to use WinZip to copy folders since the compress and extract phases of WinZip preserves folder attributes. This is of course a crazy solution, but it's all I have for now.

Perhaps somebody can point me to a fool's guide for creating my own temporary Dapper samba package containing this patch. I know it's not something you would encourage but I am pretty desparate :(

(End of Life) and is no longer supported. As a result, this bug
