Bug Description

compiz-bcop was packaged for Ubuntu Gutsy, but since Hardy, the same application has been packaged by Debian under the name compiz-fusion-bcop and imported to the Ubuntu repositories. These packages offer exactly the same application. Attempting to install both results in an error/crash. compiz-bcop should be removed from the Ubuntu repositories.

Users appear to be installing all compiz* packages at once, triggering the clash between these two almost identical packages. This makes this bug high priority simply due to the frequency at which the problem is encountered.

WORKAROUND:
Don't install compiz-bcop. Use compiz-fusion-bcop instead.

SOLUTION:
Remove compiz-bcop from the Ubuntu repositories.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Intrepid Ibex. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Intrepid comes with compiz-fusion-bcop 0.7.6-1, so you should be able to test by installing this new version. Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

I can confirm that this bug also effects the amd64 arch. I have not tested Intrepid and will not be able to do so (no available writable media)

Master: Your issue is not related to this bug report.

This bug is caused by compiz-bcop being the same program as compiz-fusion-bcop, hence the clash. I have updated this bug report to reflect the situation.

ah. and bump compiz-fusion-bcop to main.

(Presumably it avoids a MIR, as the upstream codebase should be the same)
