While installing lubuntu bionic-beaver the installer crashed with the error that it wasa unable to install grub to /dev/mmcblk1.

Strange. There was an IO error trying to update the EFI variables. I'm not sure if it matters or if it is just odd, but the system tried to install the 32 bit grub even though you appear to have a 64 bit system.

This has happened to me on two occasions, once on an Apple Macbook 2009 and once on an Intel NUC, both using Mate 18.04 Beta 2.
