xorg/x fails to start on Acer 3000 [hardy alpha1 liveCD]

Bug Description

After booting from the Hardy Alpha 1 CD on my Acer 3000 laptop, and selecting the "Start or Install Ubuntu" option, I receive this error on the last boot step (~rc.local something):

/etc/gdm/failsafeXServer: line 47: [: too many arguments
Warning: Could not retrieve EDID because get-edid is not installed (1)
open_sock(): Permission denied
: error: this program does not know how to configure the "10
shared/default-xserver doesn't exist" X server
Warning: Could not generate /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe for vesa
driver
