Bug Description

DISTRIB_CODENAME=artful
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 17.10"
ii firefox 57.0+build4- amd64

Because of the horrible API change that destroyed over 10000 AddOns i decided to revert to the firefox 56 package.

firefox_56.0+build6-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
firefox-locale-de_56.0+build6-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb

I removed the 57 packages by synaptic, installed both 56 .deb with sudo dpkg. After that the config must be renamed because of incompatibility. Than i had set the 56 packages at hold with synaptic.

Shortly after reboot the 57 packages are back on the system, there was no update manager running. The chronic in synaptic shows the revert from last day and both packages at 57 including the lock that was set at the 56 version.

Regression: If we have a packet management in ubuntu, all packages should be using that. All up- and downgrades should be visible in the chronic, but the secret upgrade is missing there.

Happens on ubuntumate 17.10 and ubuntustudio 17.10 the same way.

Why did this update without questioning the user? Do firefox itself trigger the unattended update?

From history.log

Start-Date: 2017-11-17 15:17:48
Commandline: /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade
Upgrade: firefox:amd64 (56.0+build6-0ubuntu1, 57.0+build4-0ubuntu0.17.10.5)

Today while surfing firefox 56 crash and after restart ver 57 jumps to the screen. The firefox marked for hold version was updated without any warning and way to stop that.

No firefox 57 is not a security upgrade from it's severe incompatibility to previous versions.

EricDHH,

The issue you describe isn't specifically related to Firefox. Holding any package in synaptic will not stop an upgrade using apt or unattended-upgrades. I believe the opposite also to be true, holding a package with apt-mark won't stop synaptic upgrading it.

I'd like to close your bug report by marking it as a duplicate of bug 1766161 which although reported later has been worked on by the Bug Squad, the importance has been set and of course is already assigned to the correct package.

Do you agree that the other bug adequately describes the problem that you came across with Firefox 56/57?
