This happened after restarting gdm multiple times to try to obtain the screen in the correct position. The screen was turned by 180 degrees because of bug #1731030.

It looks like this is probably a result of gnome-shell crashing. That would bring down mutter which is internal to gnome-shell breaking the connection to Xwayland, making it crash.

Really we need to modify Xwayland to not SIGABRT on such errors, because they are just errors and not bugs in Xwayland itself.
