windows switcher takes top "half" of space only, also defaults to 1x6 insead of 2x3 (using compiz-fusion)

when i switch on "desktop effects" my workspace switcher (bottom right) 3 coloms x 2 rows only takes up half of the "workspace switcher" box. when i disable desktop effects all is well...

what other info do you guys/gals need?

Removing workplace-switcher from the panel then re-adding it eliminated the (symptom of the) problem.
