lightning calendar plugin fails to display events in calendar "month view"

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Items added to the calendar month view appear until the user navigates away from that date/page/view etc. On returning the item disappears, and no other items (regardless of which view created in, or which calendar, local or remote, they come from) appear at all. there doesn't appear to be any configuration settings for this behaviour... it is either a bug, or a design flaw.
