Happened to me with the Ubuntu MATE upgrade as well. I handled things the shell way because I dislike having stuff change on me as I update.

If this bug is encountered, the est way around it after `do-package-upgrade` does `sudo dpkg --configure -a` is `sudo apt upgrade -y` and sit tight during the upgrade process for further errors if encountered Fortunately I encountered none after this.

Also on upgrade from 17.04 to 17.10 KDE. In addition, I was running in a console, as X showed only the mouse cursor, xosview, and otherwise a black screen. I was hoping to finish the upgrade before troubleshooting the black screen. Trying the suggestion in comment #7 just got the same error.
