This package is part of the ‘universe’ section of the Ubuntu or Cloud archive.
Universe packages are maintained by the community, and the maintainers do not necessarily work for Canonical, therefore these packages are not always supported by Canonical directly.
The existing process to update packages in the Universe archive with patches, is as follows:
1. Upstream: Upstream your fix to the appropriate upstream project.
2. Debian: once your patch is ack’ed and accepted upstream, you need to request a merge of this patch to the package in Debian stable. https://www.debian.org/Bugs/Reporting use this link to report your issue and submit a fix.
3. Ubuntu: Once it is merged into Debian stable, request a merge of this package with Ubuntu. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Debian/Bugs will provide you an overview on how to handle bugs that are reported to Debian and subsequently to Ubuntu.
- The merge request lands by default in Ubuntu's current development release (today ‘Artful’).
- If required an SRU may follow to get the changes into already released Ubuntu versions (like ‘Xenial’ or ‘Zesty’).
Work with the respective upstream maintainers (Debian and Ubuntu) is required during this process. For critical issues we can advise you as you go through this process and help push the patches through by chasing the appropriate project contributors.
[To find out if a package is a universe package use: apt policy <package-name> or have a look at the Launchpad package page: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/ ]

Actually things are a little different with regards to OpenStack packages in Ubuntu; the Debian OpenStack team has been a bit on and off over the last few years, so Ubuntu leads with OpenStack packages rather than the normal sync/merge flow with Debian, with git repositories on Launchpad for the Ubuntu package:

  https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-server-dev/ubuntu/+source/openstack-trove/+git/openstack-trove

I'd suggest the following course of action to get updates to trove in Ocata; As the changes are committed upstream, a point release into Ubuntu zesty (which is the source of trove in the Ocata Cloud Archive) is appropriate.

Preparing the upload for a point release is probably a small amount of effort; however it will need testing in both Zesty and for the Ocata Cloud Archive on Xenial for any regressions. The Ubuntu OpenStack team don't have this capability (as trove remains un-charmed), so someone with capability to test on both of these targets will need to complete this activity to fulfil the requirements of the stable release update process.

As an aside, there are automatically built packages for all OpenStack services from upstream stable branches here:

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:openstack-ubuntu-testing/ocata
  sudo apt-get update

This includes trove with the changes that landed in May.

Alternatively we can just pick the required fix into the package branch for ocata as a quilte patch. In that case, its probably better that we raise Ubuntu tasks on bug 1671655 rather than doing a full point release (which I note that trove upstream has not done for the 7.x.x series yet).

Marking 'Incomplete' pending decision on whether trove can pop a new point release (preferable IMHO) or whether we want to cherry-pick into the package instead.

James: The PPA you had provided at Ocata worked for us. Could you push this through?
