javascript setInterval causes glitches

On visiting sites like "www.hattrick.org" and "www.trackking.org", the javascript setInterval that powers the continually-updated clocks on the pages causes the entire system to 'momentarily freeze' each second as the clock display updates.

In Track King, this glitch just causes a shudder in any animations on the screen at the time - Flash, advanced window effects on my desktop, even glxgears.

In Hattrick, excessively 'wobbling' my browser window while the clock is on screen will actually cause Firefox to hang.

Today's my first day with Ubuntu. 7.10. A few problems enabling a Radeon 9600 on my Athlon 3000+ build of Ubuntu, but got all the other lovely effects happening now....however as these Web Games are a large part of my daily routine, this bug is quite meaningful to me :-(

To take care of your problem, we need to know:
- What version of Firefox are you using?
- Do you run a composite manager (such as Compiz[fusion]?)
- Do you run GNOME or KDE? If you're running Ubuntu (not Kubuntu), you're almost certainly running GNOME.

Hi there,

FF 2.0.0.9 - although I am starting it with the "switch" to load
bookmarks etc from my windows installation of FF.
Yes, Compiz fusion
Yes, Gnome.

Today for the first time I noticed this occurring in Windows also, and a
reboot cleared it - so I'm actually now wondering if it's a bug in the
latest version of FF?

This could very well be a bug in firefox (that's why I assigned this report to the firefox package). Therefore I am assigning it now to the mozilla-bugs team too so that they can decide whether this is Bug#376643 (as tracked in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=376643; but ment to be fixed in 2.0.0.8 http://steveengland.wordpress.com/firefox-changelogs/firefox-2008-changelog/) or something new.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. I can not reproduce this issue in hardy with firefox 3.
