Bug Description

In system with multiple user account with automatic login enabled, automatic login works as expected, after reboot I get the wayland session for that account. But when switching to another account there is no Ubuntu desktop option, only Ubuntu on Xorg, Unity and some others like LXDE I have installed.
Without automatic login, I can select Ubuntu for all sessions and it's the default.
I did't do a fresh install but have upgraded the system from 17.04.

I find that the same happens randomly without automatic login, and without even logging in a first time. Just randomly some login options including the Ubuntu wayland one are missing. Have to reboot once or twice to get the option back.

Thank you for your bug report, could you enable gdm debugging but uncommenting the corresponding line in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and add your syslog after reproducing the issue?

My syslog with gdm debug.
There seems to be left overs from history, I have not done clean install in years.

I discovered recently that one way to make the Wayland login options vanish is to have any bug in the mutter eglnative backend that triggers an assertion. gnome-shell doesn't treat this as fatal, but it does remove Wayland options from the list of login sessions in that case.

So this assertion from your log might be relevant:

loka 08 10:50:57 username-System-Product-Name gnome-shell[2848]: setup_framebuffers: assertion 'width > 0' failed

Or it might be one of the other gnome-shell assertions in your log.
