I am not talking about creating sublayers, rather, just showing a list of
all the objects contained on a layer as the xml editor does. I would like
the power to individually hide or lock these objects (having them behave
like layer, without having to always create a new layer for each shape I
draw)

Adding other kinds of objects to the layer dialog like Illustrator did isn't a good solution; it ruins the dialog for easy layer-specific operations. Why not e.g. just add the ability to hide/lock objects from the XML tree?
