Is there anything new with this issue?

With the patch for Spectre and Meltdown flaws, the default kernel in 16.04 has to be upgraded from 4.10.0-42 to 4.13.0-26. But nvidia-340 340.104 drivers do not work with kernel 4.13.0-26. And newer nvidia drivers (for example 384) do not support old GPUs such as GeForce 200 series.

I have a GeForce 210 GPU, and I am stuck with kernel 4.10.0-42 (and its vulnerabilities) because of this issue.

This issue has thus became critical for users with an old nVidia GPU.

the only option for was to downgrade nvidea drives to 304.137

To Pedro:
Yes, downgrading to nvidia drivers 304.137 does work. However, I have some other issues (tearing in videos) with drivers 304.137.

The alternative is to keep nvidia drivers 340, and to downgrade the kernel to 4.4.0-109: nvidia drivers 340 work fine with kernel 4.4.0-109. And kernel 4.4.0-109 has patches for Spectre and Meltdown flaws. This worked for me.
