Bug Description
When Outline mode was first implemented (~0.44 beta), bitmaps were shown in
Outline mode.
Now a red frame with an X is shown. For some applications (such as tracing
a bitmap) the bitmap needs to be shown in Outline mode.
By putting an option in Preferences or in the View menu, this could be
accomplished.

what this post first made me think of is you know the edge-detection
tracing option - maybe it could be more helpful if it displayed a fast
edge-detected trace instead of the bitmap while you are in outline mode?
that could be a neat idea.
It of course wouldn't have actually done anything to the image istelf,
just a temporary thing so you can get your bearings.
