Bug Description

It would be useful to allow for data entry and then graphs displaying this
data, similar to Illustrator's Graphs function. Such a development would
allow for creating figures with graphs, pictures, etc.

Please try to avoid filing anonymous requests. Instead please get an
account and login so we can be confident you receive any feedback we
provide or are able to ask for follow up information if necessary.

Please also try checking through existing request to avoid filing
duplicate reports. This request may need to be closed in favour of older
reports.

Please try to describe in more detail what you mean.
Screenshots or mockups of what you mean might be helpful too.
Also if you can describe the specific problem you are trying to solve (in
this case what graph types are you most interested in) perhaps we can
suggest a workaround.
Although developers do make great efforts to familiarise themselves with
other relevant software it is not always practical to keep up to date with
the latest expensive proprietary software, requiring the use of
proproprietary operating systems. Screenshots really are helpful, and
maybe also links to good webpages.

Gnumeric is a free and open spreadsheet available for Windows and Linux
and includes chart and graphing tools and the option to export to SVG. I
would strongly recommend you try it.
Many inkscape users work with tools such as Graphviz or gnuplot and
convert their results to SVG and only use Inkscape for finishing touches.
Perhaps an enthusiastic developer could reuse code from Gnumeric to get a
headstart on adding graphing functionality to Inkscape but it would still
take a lot of work and graphing tools are not yet included on the long term
roadmap and it is relatively unlikely to be included anytime soon.
Inkscape focusses heavily on SVG and although charts are possible they are
not specifically required making them a lower priority, but it all depends
on who volunteers to work on it.

A description of the underlying problems you are trying to solve would be
useful. If there was a particular type of graph you were interested in
someone might be interested enough to provide an extension to do that
rather than a fully generalised graphing tool.

Thanks for the extensive reply. I have taken your advice and signed up. I
am looking first at Gnumeric to see if this will fill my needs.
Specifically I would like to be able to specify my graph size to meet
publication requirements. This would mean being able to modify bar width in
bar graphs, font size, etc. Illustrator has this functionality in its
graphs function. See: http://www.creativepro.com/story/howto/24529.html for
a brief, though this is a bit extreme for what I am looking for. Hopefully
this makes sense. I've been using Excel to generate graphs and pasting them
into Inkscape or other image editing software, but I have many problems
with formating. It would be ideal to be able to format and edit all in one
program. I am mainly interested in simple vertical bar graphs where I can
change color, column width, graph size and font.

This is fairly outside Inkscape's use cases currently, but it sort of sounds similar to the function plotter. Perhaps this would make a good extension?

I'd say, just use Gnumeric. It has SVG export of graphs :-)
