Bug Description

i am with an old intel chipset motherboard having an integrated realtek alc888 sound, and Ubuntu 16.04 Desktop (64-bit); since the latest update there has had no effect when adjusting sound volume from the sound menu on the menu bar and sound settings, and no sound in counter strike 1.6 linux version, also, there has appeared an effect of a sound interruption/break (for less than a second) when switching between applications, however, i can still adjust the sound volume from gnome alsa mixer

the latest update includes:

snapd-login-service:amd64
libsnapd-glib1:amd64
linux-firmware:amd64
libgd3:amd64

the previous ——:

libpackagekit-glib2-16:amd64
gir1.2-packagekitglib-1.0:amd64

the problem is still available - there has been no change since the date of publication - the hitherto released updates have not resolved it

the problem is still there to date - may the proposed update resolve it

why is there not any response to this bug report?!

the latest updates were released just now, including linux-firmware 1.157.13, and the problem is still there even after i installed them on my computer - there is still no effect when adjusting sound volume slider from the sound menu on the menu bar and sound settings - what is going on, i thought the problem will be resolved after the new linux-firmware update?! - i haven't been able to adjust sound volume for almost two months

two months and nothing?!

i still have no sound in certain internet browsers and games - i think the problem has occurred since i installed an official update with linux-firmware (the previous official release (of the package) for ubuntu 16.04 64)

at least tell me to whom i should address/direct this issue?!

I'm not sure why this was reported against alsa-drivers, you didn't report any alsa packages in those that were upgraded when the problem started. To get the bug noticed it's helpful to report the bug against the appropriate package. If you believe the issue is related to a linux-firmware update then please report the bug against that package. Changing the bug to affect linux-firmware.

Do you know what version of linux-firmware you were using before the update which broke your audio?

Please capture dmesg on your machine and attach it to this bug; let me know if you need instructions for how to do this. Thanks!

the issue definitely affects the sound, which is why i set alsa-driver as affected

the version of linux-firmware was 1.157.11 before the fatal update

here i attach a file with kernel ring buffer(dmesg) messages

IIRC, Realtek codecs don't use firmware.

Does downgrade linux-firmware help?

Yes, please do try reverting to the old linux-firmware and see if the problem persists. You can get the old version from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/1.157.11/+build/12636571/+files/linux-firmware_1.157.11_all.deb, you'll need to reboot after installing it.

it has turned out that the problem persists even with the older versions of linux-firmware (1.157.11 and 1.157.10) - i tried with them today

what i did was:

sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware_1.157.11_all.deb
sudo reboot

and nothing changed
then:

sudo apt-get remove linux-firmware
sudo apt-get install linux-generic linux-image-generic linux-generic-hwe-16.04 linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04
sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware_1.157.11_all.deb
sudo reboot

and the problem persisted
then:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-generic linux-image-generic linux-generic-hwe-16.04 linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04
sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-generic linux-image-generic linux-generic-hwe-16.04 linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 linux-firmware
sudo reboot

and there was no change again

same with 1.157.10

probably the problem comes from another package, but i remember very well how there had been sound in the old games and in all browsers before those september updates, and the sound menu bar volume control slider worked

what else could it be?!

not sure if this may be a cause of the problem, but, just for the record, i am with gnome-session-flashback latest version, which has not been upgraded for about 2 years

sound has somehow been fixed since i set 'sound settings...' --> 'Output' --> 'Play sound through' to 'Headphones Built-in Audio' two days ago - now sound works fine in all games, browsers and applications in general

thanks for the help of everyone who responded
