Bug Description
Simply apt full-upgrade killed this off.
The system is a fresh install, only installed packages are from official sources (php, mysql, nginx).
I'm not a system tweaker, I like the usual stability of Ubuntu so leave all settings as standard.

That lets the server start/restart fail.
[1] recommends to (re)initialize the data dir for this.
But that would require a data dir be modified or killed to occur, so I have to assume it is some local config change. If it wasn't you maybe a script/app that tried to change it for you but failed?
