Hey Dale,

Hi Will,

Again .. here are the packages:

ubuntu-unity-desktop

ubuntu-settings

from the ppa

Since I'm missing some context could you tell me the "what" there? Those packages need...(I'm going to guess "sponsoring", but if that's the case did you go through the normal process/ubuntu-sponsors)?
Also what ppa are we talking about?

"But I am talking about ubuntu-unity-desktop and ubuntu-settings package from ppa. How can we move those to universe? Usually we need to go through MOTU where we need to find a member of Motu who can upload to archive, but in this case can we ping Martin? He can review it and has upload access to archive."

ubuntu-unity-desktop is a new package from what I can see and should go to universe if uploaded to the ubuntu archive but ubuntu-settings is a package in main used by Ubuntu Desktop so it's going to stay there ... why would you like to move it to universe exactly?

Cheers,
Sebastien Bacher

Hi Seb,

here is the ppa:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unity7maintainers/unity7-desktop
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-unity-desktop

at https://launchpad.net/~unity7maintainers

"seb:

Hi,

Where is this discussion going on? On #ubuntu-desktop ? It would be better if I can join the discussion directly.

We need two packages in the universe:

A) ''ubuntu-unity-desktop". This is the meta package required a fully functional unity-desktop.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-meta/+bug/1736994

B) unity-settings. There is no "ubuntu-settings". There is only unity-settings which I decoupled from ubuntu-settings. See this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-settings/+bug/1735998

ubuntu-settings stays in main. We have nothing to do with it. Once unity-settings move into universe I open a merge-request to drop unity related code from ubuntu-settings.

Let me know if anything else is required.

Thanks.

We got most of this adressed but there is still work to convince them we are a credible group, or incredible 😇

Hi Dale,

Apologies for not replying sooner to this. I know you've put this on the
agenda for this week's Tech Board meeting, and I'm only now posting my
follow-up questions, which will give you practically no time to collect
answers. Still, I'm posting here so that we have a record of the questions,
and we can discuss further as necessary both during the IRC meeting and
afterwards.

This post did see some discussion during the previous TB meeting, and the
main concern raised is whether this project is sustainable. All of our
flavors have upstreams for their desktop components that have a demonstrated
track record of maintaining this software. We certainly cannot expect a
desktop such as Unity to continue to work without developers actively
working on the software.

Which source packages in the archive are you proposing that this package
will maintain as part of this flavor? Which source packages are you relying
on others to maintain?

Does your team have an existing track record of uploading to the Ubuntu
archive those packages that you will be maintaining? Which source packages,
and which members of your team? Are the members of your team who have done
these uploads committed to carrying this work forward? (To be specific: I
see several members on your team who are Canonical employees and may be
emotionally invested in the project, and have uploaded these packages in the
past when they were maintained by Canonical; ...
