This will be fixed in the next release, where all the version info will be consistent :)

Good question. Some of the hardcoded places may potentially be fixed. The ones in the UI files though, such as the reported About dialog - we can either introduce a preprocessing step in the build process, which I would avoid, or make the dialogs "non-static", i.e. the version field is filled in dynamically - this will be easier, but it feels the added complexity may not outweigh the little manual overhead at deployment time.

This is actually what I did in commits https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~variety/variety/trunk/revision/604 (for the About dialog) and http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~variety/variety/trunk/revision/603 (setup.py). So, now the only place that needs changing on every version bump is variety_lib/varietyconfig.py
