Bug Description

During normal work various little acpi event windows (that look like onscreen
displays) constantly pop up while running KDE, giving false reports on battery
status, plugged in/unplugged, etc. In addition, I get the following sorts of
things filling up my dmesg log:

Asus ACPI: Error reading brightness
Asus ACPI: Error reading LCD status
Asus ACPI: Error reading LCD status

Disabling acpi solves this problem but disables the ability to throttle the cpu.

This happens in warty (last I tried), breezy (last I tried) and hoary.

The effect seems to apear using kde as windowmanager only. The use of the
kde-libs in kde applications out of windowmaker works as expected.

Bugzilla doesn't keep me up to date. If possible put me in CC list - my status
apparently doesn't allow me to do this myself.

If you need more input let me know.

This is needed in order to help manage the current bug list for the kernel. We

If this change was in error for this bug, please respond and make the

If possible, please upgrade to Dapper's 2.6.15-7 kernel. If you do not want to
upgrade to Dapper, then you can also wait for the Dapper Flight 2 CD's, which
are due out within the next few days.

Let me know if this bug still exists with this kernel.

I didn't get anything regarding this from the pull for -8.10. Do you still have it?

I got this bug too. Using Asus A6R Laptop (celeron m 380, 512, ati x200m)
and Dapper Flight 6 Kubuntu with the latest updates, kernel is 2.6.15-20
It seems though that I only get the error reading LCD status, not the brightness one.
Also the only report that flashes on the screen is LCD status on, LCD status off.

I only get LCD On/Off. Laptop is an Asus W3V, kernel 2.6.15-22-386 on the latest Dapper. There's no point attaching dmesg as like the user above, it's full of "Asus ACPI: Error reading LCD status".

I can confirm that this does not affect GNOME, only KDE.

Probably I should mension, that I didn't experience that behavior on a Knoppix Hd installation (3.8.1 2005-04-08 vmlinuz-2.6.11-1-686) nor on any later Knoppix/Kanotix Live-CD.

Maybe this helps

Using 2.6.15-23-386 kernel, there's no longer the "Asus ACPI: Error reading LCD status" in dmesg, but the splash screen still comes up frequently.
I also didn't get this bug when using Kanotix or other KDE distros.

This is a patch from http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=10211530&forum_id=33295
that fixes "Asus ACPI: Error reading LCD status" for Asus W3V. I compiled modified asus_acpi module with kernel lcd error reporting enabled and everything went ok.

Dapper drake:

Testing Dapper drake live CD - the original one from shipit - I was not able to get up kde at all, so things changed worse. Give me a note, if there is a chance to solve this problem by providing more Information - namely, what to look for, booting up with the CD.

Maybe one day I will see KDE _and_ Kubuntu working on my box..

Hi All,

This bug was marked "Fix Committed" a while ago but there wasn't any comments as to whether this was "Fix Released". If you are still experiencing this issue, care to test the latest Hardy Heron 8.04 Alpha release - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing ? The Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the kernel. You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. Thanks.
