No audio output to Speakers when HDMI cable removed

Bug Description

The Sound Settings dialog in Unity allows to switch between various audio outputs.

If HDMI is selected and the cable removed the dialog shows that Speakers are selected. But there is no audio. To actually output audio to speakers one needs to click some other output ("Simultaneous output ...") and then again on Speakers.
The expected behaviour would be to actually play audio on the speakers without the need to switch forth and back.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.13 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I have had this problem since a long time.
With kernel 4.13 it seems to be fixed.

Unfortunately I have to revise what I said. The bug does still exists in 4.13.
There is however the difference that with the 4.10 kernel it always exists, whereas in 4.13 it sometimes happens and sometimes correctly switches to analog audio. I haven't found yet any pattern when it happens.
