Guides to page edges

Bug Description

I promised to post an 'rfe' - I hope this is the right
place to do so.

I would love a way to place guides on the four edges of
a page automatically. Those page borders are too bold
sometimes, I like to hide them but then I must manually
drag guides and place them - a drag (literally)!

- This extracted from my wiki post at:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/User:Bats#Paths.2FOutlines
Where I have other suggestions. There has been some
good input so far.

I could easily implement this as a gimp script (in fact I've
implemented something very similar, a script to place 4
guides around the current selection bounding box) and this
sounds like an ideal think to implement if someone is
looking for an extension project.

Given the underlying problem you describe it would probaby
be a good idea to provideoptions allowing the page border to
be configured somewhere. i dont think there is a visible
preference for this but there may already be a configuration
file buried somewhere allowing you to change it

IMHO, 4 guides around the current selection bounding box
would we so wonderfully handy, it should be right in the
product (right click maybe ?). As it's feraly easy to align
an object on the page, you also have the page guides a few
clicks away.

me too ...

I'd like this and a guide config dialog (like Scribus
has?!).

Incidentally (in 0.43 at least) you can alter the page
borders on a per document basis, add or remove the border
shadow, change its colour, put it above or below the
image, ...

The page border can be configured, see "Document Properties"
but to me this is a weird place to put it since the page
border is non-printing option to change the users view and
it makes little sense to configure it on a per document basis

Although automatic guides placement would be nice, I think the current snapping features are capable enough for easily placing precise guide around objects.
IMO, just adding an option in the guides preferences to "snap guides to page edges" would complete the set.
That's the only feature I really miss in guides atm.
Guides on page edges are useful for snapping objects inside the page later, placing cut marks, managing bleeds, etc.
And thinking it further, it would be really handy to have snapping on page edges for objects too.

Upcoming 0.47 version has an "Edit->Guides around page" command that does what you want :)
