Direct Pattern Fill From SVG/bitmap file

Could there be a button in the "Fill and Stroke" dialog
that would let you directly select an image or svg file
and use that as a pattern? Instead of 1) importing an
image/svg file, 2) converting the image to a pattern,
3) selecting that pattern from a long list of numbers
in the dropdown, then 4) deleting the image, you could
do all of this in one step.

It would also be really convenient if the pattern
dropdown had small thumbnails previewing the patterns,
since the current 4 digit numbers quickly become
unmanagable for even small quantities of patterns.
