Bug Description

What I expect to happen: I expect to get scan output from the back of the page when back is selected, front and back output when front & back is selected in preferences.

What happens: only front is shown.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
Release: 16.04

$ apt-cache policy simple-scan
simple-scan:

The Front, Back and Duplex are working only in ADF mode.

Now I see the root cause of problem:
https://www.fujitsu.com/pl/products/computing/peripheral/scanners/scansnap/ix500/

Your scanner doesn't have FlatBed.
To workaround it you could use ADF feeder.
