Bug Description

I just installed daily iso and I cant login to Gnome at all, when I enter my password after initial reboot the desktop hard locks and I must turn off my laptop, I cant get into virtual consoles or anything. My graphics card is Nvidia, there is no integrated Intel graphics card, only dedicated Nvidia graphics card. Logging into X.org or Wayland session makes no difference, both of them completely freeze the system. How can I debug this?

Please try this:

1. Don't log in, so the system doesn't lock up.
2. Switch to a VT (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F4) and log in.
3. List your nvidia-related packages (dpkg -l | grep nvidia) and paste them here.

Furthermore, if you have a working internet connection that is on without needing to log in then please also run this in the VT:

4. apport-collect 1708608

5. If you skipped step 4, then please try plugging in an ethernet cable, reboot and retry step 4.

dpkg -l | nvidia

Returns empty, I did lsmod and grep nouveau and Nouveau driver seems to be in use.

I managed to connect via USB tethering from my phone, but apport-collect says I need to authorize a token via browser which I cant do from the console.

You should be able to type the link it gives you into a different machine's browser...?

Nvidia GTX970M.

I will give it a try by entering the link via my phone, I dont have a different computer available at this location.

And another thing :)

Please try installing the official Nvidia driver from your VT login using:

  sudo apt install nvidia-375

If your problem is caused by the nouveau driver then that should get around it.

I managed to authorize the computer via my phone, but the command is still giving errors:

ERROR: connecting to Launchpad failed: local variable browser_obj referenced before assignment etc.

I will try installing Nvidia drivers now and report back.

Great. For completeness, please do this again now:

  apport-collect 1708608

and also paste the output of:

  lspci
