Bug Description
The ability to modify how an object snaps to the grid
would be useful. For example, using an attribute
indicate an origin point which is the only point an
object uses when snapping to the grid. Currently, the
same behavior is achieved by grouping the object with
an unstroked, unfilled box larger than the object. This
feature would be especially useful for people using
inkscape to create schematic diagrams.

Yes, I agree, would be very useful for schematics.
One limitation of the invisible box approach is that if the
grid spacing is changed, the alignment is broken.
