Bug Description

Edited 1: After some updates received, it freezes just after login, making any action impossible.

I have a PC with a nVidia GeForce 6800XT graphics card. I installed ubuntu 17.10 and have had many problems with crashes and freezes. After login, the normal screen appears, the screen flashes and the top bar disappears, flashes again and appears normal, but frozen. Clicking again blinks back to the login screen. In order to access the system I was forced to install GNOME Classic. I noticed that in ubuntu 17.04 and ubuntu GNOME 16.04 it works normal.

Since I posted this report, some updates were made available, but the situation got worse. Soon after the log, the screen turns black with no action alternatives. In the "GNOME Classic" mode that was previously able to access the system, it is now freezing too. :(

Changed in xorg (Ubuntu):

summary: - Freezes, crashes, returns to login screen.
+ Ubuntu 17.10 freezes soon after login.

I start with cd-live and everything works perfectly. I install the system and the process runs normally. I reboot, log in and ... freezes. What did the installer do wrong?

don't install the nvidia driver then, if the stock nouveau driver works?

Updates continued and the picture changed. Now I can not get in any way. Start with cd-live and everything works fine. Start the installation and everything happens normally. Restart the PC and the login screen appears. I enter the password, press enter and ... freeze! Nothing else is possible.

I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with Intel HD Graphics 530. Now I am able to login the xorg session with discrete gpu. The freeze happens when I try to login with intel and xorg. I've tried intel and wayland session but the fan goes full trottle, with acpi_osi= boot parameter the fan acts normal but i have wayland and gnome-shell processes duplicated one owned by user and one by gdm.

Old NVIDIA G73 (GeForce 7600 GS) here. Fresh install.
Freezes with Wayland and xorg using the nouveau driver, also seeing various flashing and other issues when using the recommended nvidia driver (+ freezes).

Did not see any of these issues on 17.04 or earlier versions.

Same here! If I remove the drive everything works, but I need it to work with TensorFlow

After a number of updates I've retried a couple scenarios:
1) noveau driver and wayland : froze ~30 seconds after login (I clicked on terminal from the dock)
2) noveau driver and xorg : freezes from time to time. System preferences never opens and sometimes freezes the entire system
