Paste into original layers

Bug Description

When objects are copied from multiple layers, and
pasted, they, by default, appear into the current
layer. This is a pretty awkward way of copy/pasting
multiple layers, as layers may want to be maintained at
copy/pasting. It would be great to have an extra "paste
objects into original layers" feature, besides the
current "paste objects into current layer".

As an example, I'm working on a button design that has
several layers. After I finished my first button, I
want to copy/paste all of the objects that make up my
button to be able to make my next button. In order to
accomplish this, and to maintain the layers of my
original design, I have to copy/paste the objects that
make up the button layer by layer, a very tedious work
if many layers are involved and many buttons need to be
made. It would be helpful to be able to copy/paste all
objects, from within their layers, at once, into their
original layers.

This is probably the single most disturbing lack of feature in Inkscape. I haven't ever seen an image editor that behaves this way, nor do I understand how to preserve the layers when copying and pasting. I have wasted countless hours on re-layering over and over again.... I hope a fix will be released soon enough....

For sure, yes !
It's incredibly stupid behavior not to have a possibility to copy directly differents layers and to be able to paste them in the same document or another one (opened or that will import these layers).
It's really a big waste of time when you are working on one object with differents layers, and want to paste it in several other documents => Inkscape is pasting objects all in a same layer ! Stupid, stupid, stupid !!!!!!!!!!!!! :-(((((((((
Why is there nobody working on it since several years this bug (for me it is one) has been shown ??????

Correction. I *thought* I bumped into it, but it's fixed, right?

Yes it's fixed now.. I'm using 0.91 release and no problem at all for
that point.

Tested on Windows XP, Inkscape 0.91 and trunk rev. 14495, and copy-pasting (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V) doesn't preserve the layer. But duplicating (Ctrl+D) does (also works with 0.48.5).

Bart, Patrick, could you please confirm it also works by copy-pasting? If so, please give details on your OS and Inkscape version.
Thanks!

Hi,

For me I try again to create 3 objects : a rectangle, a circle, a text. I put them in different positions one on anther one and so on.
And for each combination :
- I try to duplicate them : layers are respected as a result
- I try to copy/paste them : layers are respected as a result
Then i group them, and for each combination :
- I try to duplicate the group : layers are respected as a result, even if I ungroup just after
- I try to copy/paste the group : layers are respected as a result , even if I ungroup just after
So there is no problem at all for me in that release (It was different in previous release, I do'nt remember exactly what one it was)

The Inkscape version I'm using is Inkscape 0.91 64bits (0.91.0+47~ubuntu15.04.1 amd64). My OS is Ubuntu 15.04 64 bits (3.19.0-15-generic #15-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 16 23:32:37 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux )

Hope it will help.
Bye.

I installed my first Debian (on sparc processors) in 1997, and still use Xubuntu on all my home computers. But Inkscape also needs testing on Windows too... So today is a special Windows XP testing day!

The feature request as originally tracked in this report is _not_ implemented in Inkscape 0.91 (nor in current trunk): AFAICT there is no information about the originating Inkscape layer retained with the objects which are copied to the clipboard, nor does Inkscape's paste command have any feature which would support to create any Inkscape layer(s) not (yet) present in the current document as target layers for objects pasted from the clipboard if that information were available (associated with each object copied per current selection to the clipboard).

ISTM that the earlier comments by Patrick are not related to the feature request actually tracked here (AFAIU he uses the term 'layers' simply to refer to the stack order (aka z-order) of objects within one and the same Inkscape layer.

I agree with JazzyNico in comment #8 - this report is still relevant (i.e. not implemented).

Yes it is true I refer to the Z-order of the objects not the layers. I(m not using -yet- layers only Z-order of objects,
Thanks suv for your explanation. It's also because of my bad english...sorry ! :-)

I confirm this bug is still present in Inkscape 0.92.3.

It's hard to overstate the value of copy and paste for creating drawings.
It's hard to overstate the value of layers.

And yet in Inkscape the two cannot happily co-exist!

From my point of view it would be good to see this prioritised above wishlist since it directly impedes a natural workflow (creating objects in layers and copy and pasting them).

Actually there is a reasonable work around for this issue. If the full object is selected and cloned and then the clone is unlinked, layers are preserved.
