Bug Description

In the gradient tool, inkscape presents you with a
pull-down menu of user-defined gradients. Could
something like this be added for solid colors as well
(for both fills and strokes), so a user could save a
set of standard colors that they would like to use
throughout a particular image? I find it slightly
tedious to define colors with the sliders or wheel time
after time when I'm simply using the same color as i've
already used in the image.

I agree. This would be very helpful. Particularly for black and
white where it is tedious to define them before use.

Just to be clear, my original submission was *not* referring
to a set of pre-defined named colors (i.e. 'black',
'yellow', 'blue', 'white', etc.), although I'm sure there
are cases where this might be beneficial as well. I was
referring to the ability to define my own colors and name
them whatever I want (i.e. 'bluish-brown', 'color1234',
etc.), so that I could re-use a color I had previously
created simply by selecting it from a list instead of
positioning the sliders by hand.

I think this feature for allowing users to define their own
named colours could probably include all the 'standard'
named colours as defaults.

A possible inelegant hack/workaround would be to create
single colour gradients made using named colours and have
them listed in the gradients dialog but I'd really prefer to
see an enhancement to the GTK colour picker first, that
allowed you not just to input named colours but to choose
from a list of all the available named colours.

There is the swatch feature, but it's not 100% trivial to create new ones/change existing ones.

This, so much. I want to be able to create a colour named, say, "skin", apply it to every body part of a character, and adjust it until I find a tone I like. So far it seems the only way is to create a gradient with both colours the same, which still makes it difficult to adjust, since you have to edit both colours the same.

So Inkscape STILL doesn't have color variables (i.e. user-definable named colors) yet?
That's..... very disappointing.

Surely many people would benefit from being able to change one common color used in different places by changing one value.

Just imagine, you create a big drawing with lots and lots of outlines, some of which are spread across different layers -- and then your boss comes along and tells you that they should be DARK BLUE instead of black. What do you do? Right now, you have to go to pains to hide all objects that you dont want to select, make sure you have indeed selected all the objects you want to change, then change the stroke color and hope it works like you want to.

Instead you could have defined a color named OUTLINE used by all objects to do with that. And when your boss comes over, you open your colors dialog and change the value of OUTLINE and **BAM**, all outlines are dark blue.

For programmers, this should not even require arguing, it's so obviously useful.
