Bug Description

Since the update (linux-image-4.4.0-83-generic), I can't boot Ubuntu anymore.

First boot, freeze on desktop with clock freezed (seconds don't increment)
Second boot, Freeze during boot process
3rd boot, freezed even earlier in the boot process.

Each time I had to manually shutdown my computer by pressing the power button.

If I choose the previous kernel version linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic, it works just fine.

Note that I gathered option using ubuntu-bug linux, but obviously, it's with the previous linux kernel, the one that works. So everything should be accurate BUT the kernel version.

As a workaround - I read that Ubuntu 16.04 new installs now get linux kernel 4.8 but even a dist-upgrade of an exiting system leaves you with 16.04.2 still with the 4.4 kernel. I was able to upgrade to the 4.8.0-58-generic kernel which was able to boot successfully by using the command (while booted to the older 4.4.0-81 kernel)

sudo apt install --install-recommends xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.4 stable kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the update. I read through the page you recommend. This seems risky to me. I have -extra package installed. I don't know what will happen to my system if I uninstall them. Installing a kernel manually is not in my comfort zone. I prefer to automatically boot on the old one that risk to crash my whole system.

However, the workaround you proposed (sudo apt install --install-recommends xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04), works perfectly and I now have a more recent kernel that boot.

I still don't understand why the previous one freezed but since it was with an older version of the kernel this was later corrected.

Thanks for your time !
