Bug Description

Currently, font size selection seems to be limited to
points. Might be good to offer other units here as well.

Ad would like to add that I find font size selection quite unnatural for a

vector graphics program. Currently, inkscape has the actual chosen
font size, and then whatever secondary scaling you do on that text.

How about if you just selected the typeface and style you wanted, but
Inkscape automatically chose the best size as and when you
scaled/rotated/manipulated it?

Yes, agree that the font size should be scaled rather than
the secondary transformation on the fonts until a font is
converted to a path...

Piersvdt (piersvdt) wrote :

the problem is that when scaling you have to choose the
width or the height as font size, possibilities are:
always height, correct for line height.
always width, less usable i think.
always smallest or biggest of width and height, don't know
when that's usefull.
So height seems best, but there may be occasions where you
want to use width.
This should be disabled when store transformation is set to
preserved

The topic of this bug seems to have changed from the original topic, so I'm going to retitle it. For discussion of units for specifying font sizes, please see bug 168164.

As of a recent SVN, this behavior seems to be present. When I scale a text box, the font size of the text reflects the scaling (see screenshot). I'm going to mark this incomplete, rather than fix released, because I'm not sure I am totally clear on the issue. As to Piersvdt's concerns, it looks like an intermediate font size is used when the scaling is non-uniform. Kind of weird, agreed, but perhaps subject for a different bug report.
