Bug Description

This is going to be a vague bug report with probably no repeatability. I apologise for that, but it is part of the installer that probably doesn't get many eyeballs so I thought it worth reporting.

I have an oldish i3 machine here at work - with uefi. I installed kubuntu 16.10 from a usb stick, then upgraded to 17.04. Upon rebooting the computer (I'm fairly sure we rebooted inbetween the install and upgrade, but can't be certain - it's probably not relevant to this tale) wouldn't recognise the hard drive as a boot device.

I'd also got an Ubuntu Mate 17.04 usb stick kicking around, so thought I'd try that. I was pleasantly surprised to see the "Reinstall Ubuntu" option in the installer, so gave that a try. I got an error about not being able to mount /boot/efi or something along those lines, then the installer sat there and did nothing. Sorry, I didn't make a note of what it was trying to do - maybe removing conflicting or obsolete packages/files? After waiting for a while with no response (nothing happening in the details part of the window), I rebooted and tried again. This time the installer didn't recognise that there was an ubuntu installation so I only had the option of installing from scratch.

I wouldn't expect "Reinstall ubuntu" to hose things so much that it wouldn't get recognised. This was all on a partially hosed system though, so it's difficult to say whether it was the installer that was at fault or something else.

I'm reinstalling from scratch right now, so I can't provide more details. This is mostly a nudge to you that there might be a problem you could look around for.

Without being able to reproduce it and gather more information, there isn't really anything we can do.
