Bug Description

IBM T60 laptop (1024x768), and an external monitor, Benq E2200HDA (1920x1080) connected.

Displays with expected resolutions only if one above/below the other, not left or right.

Xrandr say:
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1848, maximum 32767 x 32767
LVDS1 connected primary 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 286mm x 214mm
   1024x768 60.00*+ 50.00
   800x600 60.32 56.25
   640x480 60.00 59.94
   512x384 60.00
DVI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VGA1 connected 1920x1080+0+768 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 476mm x 268mm
   1920x1080 59.96*+
   1680x1050 59.95
   1280x1024 75.02 60.02
   1440x900 74.98 59.89

   1280x800 59.81

   720x400 70.08
   1920x1080_60.00 59.96
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Forcing fitting any screen left/right of the other results in black screen with xrandr.

Trying to fit them left/right with System Settings > Screen Display says:
GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._gsd_2drr_2derror_2dquark.Code3: Requested size (2944, 1080) exceeds 3D hardware limit (2048, 2048). You must either rearrange the displays so that they fit within a (2048, 2048) square.

System:
- Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
- expected to happen: built up screen and VGA1 fits left/right as it works with XP.
- what happenes: see above.
