Bug Description

Using Ubuntu Gnome 17.04.

What I expected: When booting with kernel 4.10.0-21 I should see the GDM login page.

What actually happens: When booting ubuntu gnome with kernel 4.10.0-21, GDM doesn't start (or crashes) and I am stuck on a black screen or (if booting in verbose mode) the usual boot text (no particular error displayed). I can boot using kernel 4.10.0-20 with no problem.

I have reproduced this issue on two computers, both with Nvidia graphics cards and nvidia proprietary graphics driver.

linux-image-4.10.0-21-generic:
  Installed: 4.10.0-21.23
  Candidate: 4.10.0-21.23

I can provide more information if needed.

Does this bug not happen with kernels prior to -21?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.12 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Hi Joseph,
I Don't know about ALL versions prior to -21 but I can tell you for sure I don't have the bug with 4.10.0-20 and I didn't have it with 4.8.0-26 (although I haven't tested it recently).
Don't know if that helps.

I can try testing the latest upstream kernel at home tomorrow (don't want to mess up my work computer).

So it works now on my work computer in 4.10.0-22-generic. I'll try at home tonight but it looks like we might close this bug.
