login problems with 17.04

Bug Description
After boot up I'm left with a screen with just the Ubuntu logo on it, and nothing seems to be happening. Pressing Enter on the keyboard causes login to proceed after a short pause.
I'm using Ubuntu Mate, configured with automatic login.
There is also another problem which may or may not be related. If I leave the computer for a while, when I return the screen is unresponsive to mouse clicks, and normal operation can only be restored by pressing Enter on the keyboard.
