Bug Description

Hello,

I installed postfix and send a test-mail.
To check if everything works fine I looked in /var/log to mail.log

But to my surprise there is no mail.log, mail.err

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1687368/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

When I change the permissions of the directory /var/log from 755 to 775 the mail.log is shown with the right things into it.

Hello and thank you for filing this bug report!

Did you manually change /var/log from 775 to 755? In a fresh cloud image (lxd), I see /var/log has 775 permissions:

drwxrwxr-x 6 root syslog 4.0K May 1 16:16 log

Thanks,
Nish

Wierd, I did a fresh install of the server dvd and did only install postfix.
And there the permission was 755 according to stat /var/log

I did a test with lxd container and a VM from a cloudimage (but no CD install yet).
In all cases it was 775 initially and still after postfix install.

Roelof - does this reproduce on you DVD install?
If so any options selected when configuring, what image exactly are you using zesty server iso?

Also had a CD install running in the background, still 775 each time.
@Roelof - debugging begins with understanding why that was different in your case :-/
