Bug Description

I'm using Ubuntu Gnome 17.04 and have an AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics card, driving a monitor via display port with a little speaker connected to it via a standard analog audio cable in the back of the monitor (which would normally be driven by audio through display port).

This is caused by a known issue in the open source amd driver that the kernels working to resolve, but will apparently take awhile due to some sort of technical issues: https://askubuntu.com/questions/792156/amdgpu-driver-wont-play-audio-over-displayport .

Now that's fine, and there's nothing you guys here can do to fix this. However, the proprietary Ubuntu driver should be made available in the standard proprietary driver section of Ubuntu, since the non-proprietary driver has an incredibly difficult confusing installation installation method for Linux beginners, and not having audio through display port is a critical problem for certain PC configurations (like mine), people who are making their own steam machines, etc.

Please contact me if you have any questions or want to have me test things with my graphics card.

Is there any reason that 17.04 shouldn't be able to use a 16.04 driver and is this already being done on 16.04?

Also, has the bug keeping people from running steam in 16.04 been resolved yet; I know its been reported? Thats why I switched to 17.04, and having to choose between a distribution version that supports steam and one that supports drivers for one of the most popular current video cards is a problem.

AMDGPU pro does support 16.04 and it's still not an option for on it in 16.04.2 Gnome.

Justin, you should be able to run steam in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

sudo apt install steam

You probably can't use 16.04 drivers in 17.04.

Thank you, that works to install steam, though installing steam via the deb provided on steams website still doesn't work though and it's well documented:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/771032/steam-not-opening-in-ubuntu-16-04-lts

Also, why not include AMD drivers by default in the proprietary driver manager on systems its supported in (ie 16.04)? I reinstalled 16.04 to be able to use the drivers and had to manually install them.
