Confirming the same issue - 4.4.0-72 works on Dell E7470 with intel, 4.4.0-77 doesn't.
Seems like a kernel bug.
xrandr showing screens but displays fall into sleep whatever I try.

I'm unsure if this problem originates from a Xorg package - from the most recent Linux Kernel changelogs I think I noticed some bugfix that could affect this issue, but I don't have sufficient expertise to be 100% sure of that

For me, 4.4.0-78 actually made it worse on my Dell Latitude E7250 to the point where I had to downgrade to 4.4.0-72 in order to be able to use external monitors again.

With versions prior to 4.4.0-78, running xrandr a couple of times would usually cycle through all kinds of weird broken setups with parts of what was supposed to be shown on one monitor being shown in the corner of a different monitor and similar problems.

But after a few attempts, it used to somehow "get it right" and display the right layout.

With 4.4.0-78, this workaround stopped working as even though the layout may be correct, there simply is "no signal" on external monitors. They are detected by xrandr as being present and connected, the window manager appears to recognize them but neither of them receives a video signal so they just go to sleep after a few seconds.

The built-in notebook display keeps working all the time.

External monitors appear to work up to the point at which the switch from "VESA VGA" to "inteldrmfb" occurs.

After going back to 4.4.0-72, all issues went away. Even the layout options given to xrandr now work as expected.

I looks like something is horribly wrong with Intel graphics support.

I marked the 4.4.0-72 version to hold.
However maybe you wanted to grep for "intel" rather than linux-image? Isn't the graphics driver in the xserver-xorg-video-intel package?

Both commits' change are limited to Baytrail. Yours is Haswell so I don't think this bug is related to Linux kernel here.

The problem is only reproducible with some Kernel versions, how can it not be related to the Kernel?
I actually have a Sky Lake, not a Haswell like the reporter.
So maybe one of those commits for Baytrail caused a regression on other Intel Graphics processors?

Another culprit seems to be Dell laptops... I'm on a Dell Latitude E7470, other people mentioned them too, although it might just be because it's a common brand.

Robert David (rdavid369) wrote :

I am having the same issues even with the newer Kernel, 4.4.0-79-generic.

Like others have mentioned above, I can mess with the settings and sometimes "it gets it" and other times it just causes the whole machine to lock up and I have to force reboot it. Even when the monitors do show up in xrandr - they are blank with the no signal screen. Messing with the settings becomes a 50/50 but even if it does "manage to find it", the moment you have to walk away, or the screen goes to sleep, its not coming back. Here is a screen shot of the error I get sometimes, other times, there is no error and the machine just locks.

I am also on a Dell E7250
Intel Core i5-5300
Intel HD Graphics 5500 Broadwell GT2

The kernel version definitely makes a difference

@Kai-Heng could it be the same bug even if on different graphic drivers? Do you know if there is any code/module that is used for external monitors regardless of the graphics card?
For example this entry from the changelog sounds like it might be related:
  - drm/dp/mst: fix kernel oops when turning off secondary monitor

I should have mentioned that I have this problem using a Dell docking station, and I have 2 external monitors connected to it, 1 connected using the display port, the other one using DVI. It wasn't working when using 2 display ports even before 4.4.0-72-generic.

@Robert
I am not sure which driver Broadwell uses, i915 or i915_bpo.
Do you use the port on the Docking station? Does this happen on laptop's port?

@Giacomo
IIUC "drm/dp/mst: fix kernel oops when turning off secondary monitor" only silence the annoying kernel trace, it does not bring any functional change.

By the way, I didn't mention is that even the kernel versions that work are far from perfect. When I first login one of the 2 external screens goes black or starts flickering, but there is a workaround. I have to switch to text mode (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and back. With the kernel versions that don't work I couldn't find any workaround, the external screens go black and they don't switch on anymore.
Also, when I undock it while it's running it often crashes, and if it doesn't it crashes when I dock it back. Switching to text mode before docking/undocking seems to make more stable. That's most likely a different bug though.

Please see if this issue can be solved after remove xserver-xorg-video-intel.

Also, 945GME is quite different to the one used by original bug reporter...

I tried to remove but if I do also this packeges will e removed

- lubuntu-core
- lubuntu-desktop

So I did apt-get install --reinstal xserver-xorg-video-intel but nothing has changed.

If I plug in the VGA and open a window I can see that the system see the monitor anch I can set via the 'monitor setting' what to show where but the PC input of the TV doesn't highlight and can't connect/show remotely

Please advise if we need to open a new bug with this chipset rather than continue here.

You can also modify the xorg.conf to prioritize modesetting driver over intel.

quick update.

Although the VGA cable I used with the intel chipset was working fine with other laptop/monitor telling me ihe cable is 'fine', it happen I tried a different VGA cable and this time everything work fine.

So far I suppose it is a cable pin out problem

I'll be happy to provide more info if required

thanks

I'm using a HP Pro X2 612 G1. It has VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 0a1e (rev 0b) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 221b. The external Monitor (connected to DisplayPort) is recognized, but it the grafics is distorted and flickering. There is no hardware issue, because the same configuration is working with windows 10.

Booting Linux version 5.3.0-26-generic (buildd@lgw01-amd64-039) (gcc version 7.4.0 (Ubuntu 7.4.0-1ubuntu1~18.04.1)) #28~18.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Dec 18 , Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-5.3.0-26-generic root=UUID=480802c1-9e34-498b-bce0-044986a92dfc ro quiet splash i915.edp_vswing=1 vt.handoff=1.

I tried booting without any i915 parameters, but it doesn't change the behavior.

Any ideas what's going wrong ?
